Case Study: X-Cel Contacts

Visions Contact Lens Calculator

The program uses precise calculations based on diopter measurements performed by a doctor during an eye exam. The various formulae give readouts for base curve, lens power, and lens diameter for an accurate contact lens fit. An important goal of the program was ease of use. The user (the doctor) simply taps the setting field, then taps the scroll arrows to change values. The resulting prescription values change in real time as the measured values change.

In addition to the PalmOS version (at left), the company required an on-line version that was just as easy to use. In fact, the on-line version (below) is a direct port of the PalmOS version to Java.

The on-line version of this program requires a Java-enabled web browser.

This is a live, working version of the Visions Contact Lens calculator. While the calculations are only useful to a qualified medical professional, this program demonstrates Intrepid Software Solutions' ability to provide business solutions using up-to-date design and development techniques in mobile and web-based environments.

Bifocal Contact Lens Calculator

Building on the success of the Visions Lens calculator, X-Cel asked Intrepid Software Solutions to develop a similar calculator for their Solution Bifocal Contact Lens product line.

Case Study: GeoStats

GeoSurvey

GeoStats, Inc. needed to expand its offering in the electronic survey data collections and processing business to include the ability to collect location-based information along with other survey data. This would prove useful, for example, in collecting maintenance data of municipal facilities, buses, streets, walkways, etc. In addition to gathering data about the conditions through human-based questionaires, the program also collects GPS data. This provides several benefits, such as ensuring that the survey-taker is physically located near the area being assessed, and providing the ability to determine the time required to move from place to place to complete the inventory. Future applications could also include the ability to map responses by geographic position, and to dispatch repair work orders to exact latitude and longitude.

GeoSurvey is a joint venture between GeoStats and Intrepidsoft. All technical aspects of the project were designed and implemented by Intrepidsoft, while GeoStats handled requirements gathering and marketing. The program includes the Intrepidsoft GPS library for handling a variety of GPS devices, complete user-level installation programs, and a Windows conduit for gathering the collected data from handheld devices in the field.
